This is a package of materials for the short story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. I have formatted the story in a way to allow students to interact with the text by writing a "gist" statement after each chunk and writing their own headings for each section.
On the questions that go along with the story, students are asked to:
-Use context clues to infer the meanings of unknown words
-Consider the text structure used
-Infer character traits
-Demonstrate both comprehension and analytical thinking
-Provide evidence for their claims
-Consider the irony of the story's ending
Finally, the nine-question multiple choice quiz is aligned to Mississippi's state test (the MCT2) but the questions are similar to many of the other standardized tests I am familiar with. Students must demonstrate knowledge of:
-Choosing Supporting Evidence
This could be a great 2-3 day standalone text, or could be incorporated into a larger unit.
