Everyone loves a mystery! The mystery in this book by Chris Van Allsburg is to use the clues in the text and illustrations to determine the identity of the stranger. What fun!

“The Stranger” is a great book to teach or reinforce inferencing skills. Students will become reading detectives as they use clues from the pictures and the text to make inferences and form a theory as to who the stranger symbolizes in this book.

This literature study unit is intended to take about 5-6 days. It can be used as a read aloud for the class, in guided reading groups, or with literature circles.

Many activities have been scaffolded to meet the needs of younger and older or more capable and lower level reading students.
