Enclosed is a five-page Character Workbook for student actors to complete in preparation for class performances of selected scenes from full-length plays.
The questions in this Character Workbook ask students to make specific and text-based choices about their character’s objectives, tactics, and physicality. By answering these questions thoroughly and thoughtfully, students are able to perform more compelling and well-rehearsed scenes. Completing this workbook also allows students who are not natural-born performers to receive credit for their efforts to portray a character onstage.
I like to pass out a Character Workbook to each student on the same day they receive their scene assignments, along with a print-out of their scene that they are able to annotate and highlight. Students should have already read the entire play before selecting or being assigned a particular scene.
On the first day of scene study and rehearsal, students read their entire scene out loud with their partners, then complete the whole group questions together in class. Students are then responsible for independently completing the remaining eleven questions about their own character.
Please reach out to me with any questions and I hope you will check out my other drama classroom materials!
