I like to use this exercise on the first day of 7th grade English class to give students a chance to have some fun with writing. Because they’ve just left behind a summer of blockbuster movies, the echoes of loud, pretentious previews should be fresh in their minds. But take nothing for granted: it wouldn’t hurt to show a preview or two for students to get some sense of style, tone, and register. There are three cloze-style previews to choose from.
Students may work in pairs or solo. The approach here is similar to that of Mad-Libs, although I don’t indicate parts of speech because in many cases students will be devising phrases and clauses rather than individual words. While there are opportunities to address points of grammar, the main goal is to have fun creatively so your students will look forward to each English class to come.
