This pdf has 21 pages (including the cover page, credits page, and teacher background information page).
The Summer My Father Was Ten by Pat Brisson is a guided reading level Z (depending on whether you're looking at the revised levels) and the activities in this packet lend themselves to reading levels S-Z. They should be done with a bit of teacher scaffolding and interaction. They can be completed (with book reading) in three class periods.
The design of the questions and activities aligns with the challenges and instruction style of the common core standards and PARCC. Great for guided reading groups or instructional intervention. I've used this with gifted ed. third grade and general ed fourth grade.
If you use the Notice and Note and it is new to your students, you could stretch this to fifth grade as an easy introduction. The Notice and Note fictional close reading strategy helps readers make sense of character traits, themes, motives, foreshadowing, and many other important fiction elements. The activities for Notice and Note in this pack work best after the students have had some practice with Notice and Note, but before reading a chapter book or long piece of literature.
