A 2-day end-of-year activity to help students learn about summer learning loss (sometimes call the summer slide) and make a plan to combat their own summer learning loss. An ideal activity for the last day or two when no more content can be taught because the students have already checked out and the teachers have already burnt out. On day one, students will read two articles and watch three online videos (links included for all five) and answer questions about summer learning loss. On day two, students will read about several free online learning options and two real-life learning options. Computer access for this step allows a teacher to simply hand out the assignment and whimper in the corner with minimal instruction, but I did this step by showing the students each site with my classroom computer and projector. Teachers will need to find and include flyers for their local library's summer reading program and their district's summer school program.
