Product Description
This is a 28 page packet of materials created to use with students in grades 4-7 who are reading the novel, The Summer of Riley, by Eve Bunting. It includes a 20 page student booklet designed to reinforce essential reading and writing skills. Skills include summarizing, evaluating, questioning, connecting to the text, recognizing cause and effect, using context clues, explaining, comparing and contrasting, general comprehension, determining point-of-view, author's purpose, and expanding vocabulary. Also, included at the end of the packet is an answer key for the student booklet.
The student booklet divides the text into five reading assignments (of about 30 pages each) with questions and activities to go with each one. In addition, there are culminating activities at the end of the student booklet. The booklet is designed for independent work so that students may be working on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. In my classroom, students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. They would be given three, 40 minute periods per week to complete one assignment. They would then meet once a week with me (or an aide or a parent), along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a "book club meeting") to discuss the book and review the assignments.
What worked for me, may not be what works best for you. For example, instead of using this as class work, the packet could also be used as homework. Also, instead of creating a booklet, the pages can be copied and handed out singly as separate assignments.

The Summer of Riley in a nutshell:
Eleven year old William finally got the dog he had always wanted! But how was he to know that the fun would be short lived and he would be thrust into events that he never imagined? This is a touching and realistic story about family relationships, friendships, bullies, love, hope, and letting go. It is impossible to get to the end of the story without shedding a few tears!

Appropriate for students in grades 4-7. Reading level approximately 5th grade.
