This lesson includes two skills: symmetry and endangered animals. The Common Core Standard for math is included, however, there are no Common Core standards for science at this point. This activity meets the standard for geometry in 4th grade math, however, this can be done on the second, third, or even fifth grade level easily.
Introduction: A few years ago, I was teaching third grade and wanted the students to create a meaningful and engaging work of art based on what we were learning in class. I decided to incorporate both the math skill (lines of symmetry) with the science skill (endangered animals). Voila! We had a two-fer deal!
The students create a ant project sing only 1/2 of a picture of an endangered animal (or extinct, threatened, or vulnerable) and re-creating the other side of the picture.
