This is the test I wrote for our middle school summer reading book: The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo. I gave students this test after several weeks of review of the plot, characters, and the key theme of empathy. I always emphasize quotes with students-- how to recognize and interpret important moments in the text. This builds reading comprehension, the ability to predict plot direction, and the ability to read between the lines and search for major themes in the story.
This test includes character identification (matching), reading comprehension questions (short answer), and quote identifications, as well as a full answer key.
This test could also be used as an open-book review or study guide. The quote identification section is especially targeted to help students recognize key moments of foreshadowing, character building, or revelation in the plot.
