The Tale of Genji is one of the great works of world literature and provides a brilliant picture of life in Heian Japan. In a Common Core approach the students will read the “Autumn Excursion” chapter of the text to understand Genji in his relationships with one of five different women. These women are Fujitsubo, Aoi, Murasaki, Kokiden, and Naishi who are all present in some manner in “The Autumn Excursion”. They will write the information on these women from Genji’s life in tanka, the poetic form which was essential to life in the Heian court. The students will learn the Japanese characters for The Tale of Genji and illustrate the final poetic creation. Examples included.
