One of the most difficult things to prove to students, particularly students who are already reluctant readers, is that reading can be FUN. Keeping that in mind, I always try to choose novels that I think my students will enjoy and that will teach them something new about how reading can be fun. In the case of The Teacher's Funeral, my goal was to teach my students that reading could be humorous, something that had never occurred to most of my students! This novel unit covers the “basics” of reading fiction – plot, characterization, comprehension – but includes the element of style, specifically humor. It is a full, differentiated unit plan, including chapter questions, reading reinforcement activities, writing activities and tests. I hope your students enjoy reading this book as much as mine did.
