The Tell-Tale Heart:Cite Evidence

This is a complete lesson plan for citing evidence to support analysis of what the text says using Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” This lesson plan on citing evidence to support analysis includes all student materials and an answer key.

This lesson should ideally be a second or third read of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and students who are most familiar with the plot of the story and
who have some experience with citing evidence to support claims will be most successful with it. In the lesson, students are given three claims about the story and they have to dig back through the story to find as much evidence as they can to prove the claim either true or false. Students then decide which evidence is stronger and build a claim based on the evidence they have found. The lesson includes an exit ticket.

This lesson directly addresses RL 8.1 (cite the evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says), RL 8.2 (determine a theme and how it is developed) and W 8.2 (write arguments). It also helps students learn to slow down and close read in order to answer a specific question or look for specific topics in the text. I have used it with great success in a class of 8th graders whose reading levels ranged from 5th-12th grade. It DOES NOT include the text of "The Tell-Tale Heart"
