This lesson is Common Core and Florida Standards aligned:
RL 9.2.1, RL 8.1.3, RL8.6 / LAFS 8.RL.1.1, LAFS.
It will take about 60-75 minutes for the students to complete the 45 question worksheet (depending on the student).
Key vocabulary words from the story are used in the puzzles. The puzzles enhance student comprehension of lesson related vocabulary. Here is how I use the word search. When students find the correct word, I have them write the definition next to the word at the bottom of the list. Works great! (Master vocabulary list is found on any of the word searches.)
There are several versions of this story, a middle school version and the original unabridged high school version. This worksheet works with the high school version - see link below.
If your literature book does not have this story, you can find it here:
This is a classic Poe short story that centers around the murder of an old man and how anxiety and guilt eventually brings the murderer to confess!
This 45 question worksheet is designed with cost effective photocopying in mind. This is a two page worksheet that can be combined to a front/back copy using only 1 sheet of paper. No staples. You can do the same thing with the puzzles - word search on one side and crossword on the other.
As a public high school English teacher, the biggest challenge I have is getting students to read in class or at home. Put a book or short story in front of them, they'll look at it for a few seconds and start day dreaming...
Until I stumbled upon something magnificent. Teenagers like accomplishment. These worksheets ask questions while the reader reads. Every couple of sentences, there's another question in true or false, fill in the blank, define, multiple choice formats. As the student reads, boom, another question. They answer it and continue reading. Before you know it, they have finished reading the story and completed all questions for further lessons/discussions.
These worksheets are great for daily lessons, test/quiz grades, extra credit, homework, group work (in pairs of two), substitute teacher lessons, emergency lesson plans, great for ESOL or however you can imagine.
