This 130 page document contains 15 days of lessons teaching Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried.
This unit plan includes 15 daily lesson plans including clear lesson trajectories, Common Core aligned and student friendly objectives, supplementary materials such as quizzes, discussion guides, graphic organizers and ideas for activities and differentiation, optional final project or extension materials, vocabulary/terminology posters, bulletin board ideas/ projects that can be posted in the classroom, and bonus discussion “stem” posters to help students lead respectful and productive class discussions.
Throughout the unit students will learn about Tim O’Brien’s life, and facts and information about the Vietnam War and the surrounding time period. Students will discuss their opinions of the text through the lens of literary devices including narration, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, character development, plot structure, and theme. Students will be asked to think critically about their opinion of the novel as a work of fiction or non-fiction and the role genre classification plays on the reader.
Students will be held responsible for their attainment of knowledge through pop quizzes, participation in class discussions, exit slips, completion of discussion guides and graphic organizers, and performance on the final exam. Optional final project materials are included as well as a rubric. If implemented and the teacher wishes to grant in-class work time for the project the unit plan may be extended to cover one month’s time.
