I'm really proud of this unit, and it's always a student favorite! This document contains all of my collected original ideas and resources I've used to teach The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien in my AP English Literature and Composition class. I nestle this novel in my thematic "Literature and Human Nature" quarter, so most of my lessons and discussions center on the book's rich psychological and social content -- hence my title of this unit plan, "Storytelling and Human Psychology" (see the preview for a full explanation). Along with higher-order, inquiry-style thinking driving my content, I also try to make my classes as personal and as relevant as possible (which includes tons of movie clips!)
Along with a pacing guide and a plan for covering certain literary terms, you will find in this document 8 pages of plans mapped out chapter-by-chapter, which include:
- 24 lesson ideas (i.e., activities, projects, debates, research, essays)
- Over 20 links to complementary resources (i.e., movie clips and quality webpages)
- Over 25 rich discussion questions
Additionally, you will find in the appendices:
- 2 multiple-choice reading quizzes-
- 12 pages of printable handouts that correspond to my lesson idea
And while much of the content is relevant to AP Literature (i.e., essays and multiple-choice practice), I think I have enough ideas that would make this unit plan helpful to any English or literature class.
