"The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien is an excellent resource for any student wanting real and compelling stories from the Vietnam War. O'Brien's book is a collection of the stories of a platoon of American soldiers. Some of their stories are heroic, some are horrific and some are humorous, but all scream the message that war takes a terrible toll on the participants. O'Brien uses a style of storytelling that intertwines factual and fictional occurrences/characters. O'Brien was a soldier in Vietnam so his 'stories' are not fiction or hollywood based, but ring hauntingly true to anyone who survived Vietnam. This book is excellent for a somewhat advanced, sophisticated reader who will not be confused by this method of storytelling. The study guide will help the reader keep track of the individual stories and see how all the stories come together in the end to make a dramatic statement about war and its toll.
