The Titanic Unit is an
Interactive Web-Based, Common Core Aligned, Close Reading Activities to use with History on the Net and other amazing Titanic websites.
The Nonfiction companion story "Into the Dark Waters" in the
Storyworks magazine from Scholastic http://storyworks.scholastic.com/home
In the close reading guide students will use graphic organizers,
use and create timelines to show the events of the day leading up to the impact. They will use Nonfiction text features such as: illustrations, models and captions to locate and report information about various parts of the ship. They will compare different compartments and how they looked based on the class identification of the area. They will read about the disaster, futility and survival, describing survivors, relating events and reasoning why things were the way they were with text evidence to support their reasoning. The close reading guide follows the common core close reading and responding to text with nonfiction text features for support. I also used the Scholastic Storyworks website with the article “Into the Dark Water” from the October 2013 issue to and we also used this article in small reading groups as a discussion piece for the study of the Titanic. This web-based interactive document was done independently with the students on laptops, chrome books or desktops. Check out the Scholastic Storyworks magazine website. I would recommend it to support your classroom – tons of skill based free stuff to really make differentiation work in your classroom.
