Thank you for reviewing this lesson plan of The Tom-Chick by Carla Kirkland!
The Tom-Chick is a literary study geared for the intermediate grades (4th and 5th). It is an excellent source to exemplify the term personification! Embedded within the story is a surreptitious proverb about accepting and liking “who” you are.
Included with this lesson:
1) An original story, written by the lesson author (me). It is actually based on a true story of my own poultry;
2) Ten carefully structured questions, much in line with the original Bloom’s Taxonomy. Said questions are intentionally multi-part to aid in curtailing that habit students have of answering only one part of the question. They are also cross-referenced by number to the applicable portion of the story;
3) Clip art and illustrations that the author obtained with permission to enhance the story.
As a BONUS to this lesson, instructors may request ACTUAL pictures of my live poultry to be either emailed or texted to their phones for sharing with students! This is included free with purchase of the lesson! Simply comment on the lesson and request same, or email me through the site.
Although the story is written in a VERY elementary and READABLE format, the questions are suitable and are targeted towards 4th and 5th grade. Should the instructor choose to use this lesson with 2nd or 3rd grade, modification of the questions or clarification of the terminology may be required. The lesson plan can be tailored to suit grades 2 through 5.
