This mini-project asks kids to look at the Tom Sawyer archetype that Twain created and that permeates the TV and movies they see in popular culture. It asks students to compare Tom Sawyer to Dennis the Menace and/or Bart Simpson. It can easily be adapted to include many current characters, including Luke from "Modern Family" or Dash from "The Incredibles."
The instruction for this project is in color, the task requires internet research, and the assessed product is a keynote/powerpoint. This document is in Word, however, so it can be easily modified and printed. The task could provide the comics and illustrations (with a little more work), or could require students to recall characters they know. The product can be on paper, a paper poster, a glogster, a padlet, or Creative Book Builder.
I had my students do the project in 65 minutes-- 1.5 class periods. A better product will come from more time.
