The Toughest Cowboy by John Frank is the story of Grizz Brickbottom and his cowboy buddies. Grizz feels there is something missing from his life, so he decides to get a dog. What will his cowboy buddies think of his new pet? The story is hilarious and filled unique descriptions and figurative language. It can even be considered a type of tall tale due to all the hyperbole.
I love using picture books with my middle schoolers, and this is one I use to introduce and reinforce hyperbole, similes, and puns. There is even a little foreshadowing and irony present as well.
