This literary guide brought to you by Wake Up Sunshine dares to look into the depths of the Shakespearean tragedy of Hamlet. I created this simplified unit so my middle schoolers could experience the beauty of Shakespeare.
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet Prince of Denmark, is a tragedy in every sense of the word. Upon the murder of young Hamlet’s father (King Hamlet), his ghost instructs Hamlet to avenge his murder. King Hamlet’s murder was at the hands of the dead king’s brother, King Claudius (Prince Hamlet’s uncle); to pour salt into an open wound, Claudius consequently marries the widow, Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude. To make things even worse, Denmark is under threat of invasion from young Fortinbras, who seeks to avenge his father’s death (King Fortinbras) at the hands of Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet. What follows is a web of lies and deceit and loss of sanity in one of Shakespeare’s greatest works.
This innovative and affordable unit allows the student to be engaged in a variety of activities, which will improve their reading, writing, comprehension, critical thinking, and language skills.
