Like the Romeo and Juliet notes, students are asked to identify and explain multiple elements of each scene. Students are asked to look for character actions/interactions, literary devices, motifs, important passages, and persuasive appeals.
Students are required to use critical thinking and analysis skills to understand the importance of these elements throughout the play.
Idea: I motivated students to complete their notes well by allowing them to use their notes on their final exam and/or essay if they consistently earned As and Bs. I found that this increased their work ethic and learning throughout the unit.
Grading Idea: Highlight boxes in 2 colors -- one for strengths, and one for weaknesses. Require students to redo boxes highlighted for weaknesses and resubmit for grading. With their revision, require students to provide rationales -- why were some boxes strong, but others weak?
