As a culminating exercise to The Trial unit of study, the students are asked to participate in the court proceedings of Bruno Hauptmann. They are separated into legal teams: the prosecution and the defense. As a legal team, they will build their case to help the judge (you) determine whether or not the original guilty verdict should be upheld.

This activity is not meant to teach the elements or procedures in an actual court proceeding or debate. While some aspects/terminology may be accurate, other components have been altered to fit the needs of this particular activity.
Also, while this is intended to be used as a novel study, it could easily be adapted to be used in a Social Studies classroom as the novel is simply used as a source that students may use to find information.
