The goal of many teachers in Middle School and especially High School is to help their students begin the process of transitioning from simple structure sentences to dynamic and complex sentences. The problem they see is that students use the word "and" to connect their sentences instead of choosing more appropriate transitions.
This worksheet provides a paragraph that is one LONG sentence that only has "and" as a transition. Students will need to re-write this paragraph, breaking up the sentence into shorter, more manageable parts while including appropriate transitions and correct punctuation.
The second part of this worksheet includes a shorter paragraph that has underlined, bolded words that are simple and used often to describe situations. Students will need to re-write the paragraph and change those underlined, bolded words to words that explain the same concept, but are more complex and are "higher-level" words.
*This exercise would be excellent for students who understand what they want to say, but need to vary their descriptive words or ELL students who understand the concepts but need to add to their vocabulary.
