Revised Edition: May, 2013
This ready-to-use 43 page packet is designed for teachers to use with students in grades 4-6 as they read The Trumpet of the Swan, by E. B. White. Included is a 26 page student booklet (along with an answer key) dividing the text into 8 reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. The packet also includes a vocabulary bookmark for students to use as they read the text, an optional research activity, and several graphic organizers that can be used to compare and contrast the book with the movie.
The questions and tasks in the student booklet cover and reinforce the skills that good readers need to understand and maintain. These include comprehension, vocabulary, visualization, summarizing, connecting to the text, identifying character traits, and recognizing the difference between fiction and nonfiction. The packet gives students extra practice in writing to explain their thinking and to demonstrate their understanding.
The booklet is designed for independent work enabling students to work on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. In my classroom students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. I gave them three, 40 minute periods per week to complete one assignment. They would then meet once a week with me (or an aide or a parent), along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a book club meeting) to discuss the book and review the assignments.
The Trumpet of the Swan in a nutshell:
Poor Louis, a trumpeter swan, was born without a voice. Luckily, a boy named Sam comes to the rescue and helps Louis go to school where he learns to read and write. Eventually Louis gets a voice when his father gets him a trumpet. This story is a real classic and it provides strong lessons about friendship, family, and personal sacrifice.
Appropriate for students in grades 4-6. Reading level approximately 5th grade.
