The product has several skills to practice and assess. If you are like me, I complete this unit at the beginning of the school year. The journal is a nice starting point for me to see where my students are on different skills. The chapters are very short, and some of the journal activities may be based off more than one chapter. You can do many things with the journal. You can have the students complete it independently, with a partner, groups, or finish whole group. .I personally display the journal whole group and have class discussion over specific skills. I do have the students complete the visualization pieces independently first and then we discuss. The beauty of this journal, you are free to instruct to fit your students’ needs.
This journal unit aligns well with Common Core standards. The journal asks students to think like the author and analyze why an author would choose certain information to include in the book. The students will be required to make inferences, sequence events, make connections, predict what will happen next, and write his/her opinion on different topics.
