This multiple day (between 2-5) exploratory lesson asks students to wrestle with the complexities of historical research. Each student reads one of two narratives of former slaves, then must complete a T-chart with a partner who read the other narrative. Through this process, students discover that one woman told two different stories to separate interviewers exhibiting opposing opinions of her master. This activity challenges students to use historical thinking to explain the difference between the stories. This activity has been successful in grades 7 and 9 and is aligned with Common Core Reading Standards.
