Students will experience the exciting and high interest challenge of determining the successes and failures of a favorite football team and one or more rival teams throughout the football season. The PowerPoint gives specific directions for the teacher and the students for this project. Also included is the Ultimate Math Football Experience Analysis form which will be completed at the end of the project. The students will organize a method to record weekly statistics on selected categories, and they will input each data point as a fraction which will then be converted to a decimal and a percent. When all the data is gathered, the students will calculate the following data landmarks – minimum, maximum, range, mean, median, and mode. The students will then select a graph type that best depicts their information, and create the graph. Finally, the students will complete the Analysis Form to help them accurately draw conclusions from their experience. This experience is versatile for a variety of grade levels as it can be completed with simplicity or great complexity based upon the interest and skill levels of the individual students. This activity also makes an excellent ongoing math center.
