Each grouping of cards represent spellings which share sounds in our English language.
This activity is very versatile so you can adapt it to your student’s needs or to a focus spelling mini-lesson you would like students to work on at a word work center on a particular week. Anyway you decided to use this activity, it will provide an opportunity for students to visualize the choices of spelling patterns they have when spelling.
There are a variety of sounds in the English language that share spellings, such as the (k) sound which has 5 different spellings to choose from depending on the position of the sound in the word.
My goal in creating this activity was to provide a hands on activity for my students to participate – visually, auditorily & kinesthetically applying strategies &
strong collaborative thinking toward
developing successful spelling, reading & writing skills.
Basics of the activity:
Students sort sound/pic cards by sound. Eg: all (k) spellings are grouped together (k, c // ck, k, c)
Give students words to spell with missing sound – students choose from the grouping of spellings for that sound & collaborate which spelling they should use.
