CHRISTMAS THEMED READING ACTIVITY!

***Buy this as part of a GROWING BUNDLE and have your Reading resources grow with just a one off purchase***

Tried and tested in my class this week- see here how we made the switch from Reading Stations this year: Click Here for more!

This package includes:

  1. A fiction text about an undecorated Christmas tree.
  2. A vocabulary based activity.
  3. A summary based activity- write a letter to the family, summarizing how the tree felt.
  4. An inference based activity, including sentence stems to show children how to structure their answers.
  5. A letter template.

This week I have tried to keep children in as much of a routine as possible with the lead up to Christmas. The idea of this particular activity is to encourage them to TALK! Children's ideas develop by talking things out their the other children in the class.

This lesson offers opportunities to deepen their understanding of the text and dig deeper by searching for clues within the text (inference). As children can get quite restless at this time of the year, I've tried to keep the activities fun and not too intense, while still covering the necessary reading skills.

How I would teach these lessons

  1. Day 1: Read the text and discuss it as a class. Get the children to think about how the would feel if they were the tree and explain WHY they would feel that way. I would then engage with the Vocabulary activity. Children cut out the vocabulary cards and write the meaning of the words on the other side. They can they play a matching game with their partner- i.e. match your partner's explanation to the correct word.
  2. Day 2: Re-read the text, ensuring children understand all of the vocabulary. Engage in the inference based activities. I give children 4 minutes to cut these up (they don't need to be perfect) and then they pop them into an envelope/box on their table. They pick one card at a time and answer it in their copy books, using the sentence stems on the cards.
  3. Day 3- Re-read the text one more time, but this time express that the tree is NOT pleased with the family. Explain that children will have to write a letter to the family, summarizing how the tree feels.

It's light-hearted, fun and covering some reading skills! Hope you enjoy these lessons on the lead up to the Christmas.

See Whole Class Reading: Little Red Riding Hood for a fiction text.
