This lesson plan, written at a grade 7 level, was designed for ESL students. It includes:
- a 610-word text that is structured in a 5W 1H format - the six questions are asked and answered in individual paragraphs. The origins of the Underground Railroad are discussed and the role it played in Canadian history.
- a list of 18 vocabulary words (underlined in the text);
- a worksheet of comprehension questions and a group/individual activity that asks students to imagine their lives as a runaway slave.
Answer keys are included.
Please see my store for two similar lesson plans written at lower reading levels and a bundled set of all three lesson plans. I also have an extensive Underground Railroad unit for Grades 6/7 Social Studies for the non-ESL classroom.
