George Catlett Marshall, was the United States foremost soldier during World War II, served as chief of staff from 1939 to 1945, and built and directed the largest army in history. As a diplomat, he served as Secretary of State from 1947 to 1949, formulating the “Marshall Plan,” an unprecedented program of economic and military aid to foreign nations.
In July, 1938, Marshall accepted a post with the General Staff in WDC, and in September, 1939, was named chief of staff, with the rank of general, by President Roosevelt. He became general of the army in 1944, the year in which Congress created that five-star rank.
The Marshall plan was a success, and in 1953, Marshall received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
