This is a very funny story on how animals try to cheer up a cranky bear on a rainy day, so they can stay in his warm, dry cave! They each decide to give Bear their favorite feature and create it out of nature (antlers, mane, stripes). Sheep feels she has nothing to give until after Bear rejects the other “gifts” – then she realizes that she can use her wool to make him a nice soft pillow, which makes Bear happy.
There are many themes to go along with this story – friendship, caring, animal features, selfishness, the fact we all have something special about us, and more!
Included in this packet:
*students complete a page where they draw what they think will make the cranky Bear happy.
*Students review the story and color in the feature that each animal thought was its best, color it in, then draw it on Bear. Two versions available: where the word for each feature is written and one where it is not. With my younger students, I would like them to see the word, as well as recall it from the story. For my older students, I would like them to recall from the story each feature from each animal.
Suggestion: I am including both sheets with my students, copied back to back.
