Hi! This is a PPT activity I recently used with my 6th - 8th graders for a 5-minute warm-up. It contains a link to a page with a collection of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poems. Follow the directions to find the poem "The Village Blacksmith." This is a great poem which can be discussed and easily understood by middle and high school students; it tied in nicely to my 8th graders' study of the Industrial Revolution (blacksmithing became a dying profession as metal items started to be manufactured in factories); it explores the theme of loss/grief, hard work, the "American Way", etc.
If you're like me, you like to have something for your students to do or think about quietly as class is getting started. This will fill the first 5 min. of that often hectic transition time nicely, and allow you to take a break - no matter what subject you teach! - and enjoy some good old American poetry. :) Enjoy!
