This PowerPoint examines the political battle between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans during the administration of John Adams. It begins with an examination of the Alien and Sedition Acts first illuminating exactly what the acts did, then asking students to talk about the motivation of the Federalists in passing them. The presentation then delves into the response of Jefferson and Madison. It briefly examines the compact theory of government upon which they built their argument. It then examines the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions specifically and sets up the theory of nullification. This presentation is used in an AP United States history class and is based on the last part of Chapter 10 from The American Pageant, 14th edition.
