The War of 1812 Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 33 questions based on a Crash Course History video and the History.com website.
Students will first be asked to watch a 12 minute video, Crash Course U.S. History: The War of 1812. The video will go over the causes of the war: the impressment of U.S. sailors by the British, the British denying free trade with Europe, and the conflict between Britain and the United States regarding the Native Americans of the Northwest Territory. Following that, the video details several important battles of the war (Detroit, Lake Erie, New Orleans) and concludes with a discussion regarding the eventual peace and return to the status-quo between the two sides. After the Crash Course video, students are directed to watch two videos on the History.com website which provide a more political point of view behind the war. To conclude the activity, students will read an article on the History.com site that provides a detailed and concise history of the war, including the burning of Washington D.C., the formation of American (and Canadian) nationalism, and the origins of the American national anthem.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
