Set during the unrest during the Civil Rights Movement of 1963, The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a novel about a family taking a trip from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama. Enrich your students' understanding of the book and the time period by using these versatile task cards in your classroom.
The students in my class have enjoyed competing these task cards so much that they usually want to do more than one!
This bundle includes six task cards designed for each section of the book: ch. 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15 for a total of 18 task cards. The cards can be used after each section or at the end of the book for a culminating project. I've done it both ways in my class, and it works well either way.
Students are able to work individually or in pairs to complete the assigned task. Perfect for literacy centers.
Examples of tasks: plotting a route from Flint to Birmingham complete with where to stop and why, researching vintage cars of the 1960s, sequencing events, finding information about hairstyles of the 1960s, writing a short biography of a Bobo the wrestler, finding figurative language examples, and researching current points of interest in Birmingham.
