NOTE: Students will benefit from the use of a thesaurus rather than a dictionary to solve these three puzzles.

These three puzzles focus on challenging words from The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963. The first two puzzles can be used as a prereading activity to prepare students for some of the words they will encounter in the story, or they can be used during reading.

The first puzzle focuses on words from Chapters 1-8. Among the 25 clues are 11 words from the Words to Know list on my Bookmarks Plus edition of Watsons. To solve the puzzle, students provide synonyms for the challenging words.

The second puzzle focuses on words from Chapter 9 through the Epilogue. Among the 25 clues are 14 words from the Words to Know list on my Bookmarks Plus edition of Watsons. To solve the puzzle, students provide synonyms for the challenging words.

The third puzzle is comprehensive and contains only the 25 words from the Words to Know list of my Bookmarks Plus edition of Watsons. The clues consist of the sentences from the story that contain the words. Students provide synonyms for the words.

Between the bookmarks and the crosswords, students can be exposed to the same words three times!
