24 extension activities designed to test students' knowledge of the novel, their ability to see events from more than one viewpoint and their ability to write in different styles/formats. This is a bundle of 24 assignments / prompts based on The Wave by Todd Strasser.
Some tasks require students to imagine that they are characters in the novel, and then to write in the voice of that character using an appropriate register and tone. Other activities ask students to research topics and present their findings as oral presentations (supported with a slideshow). Some are creative / personal writing starters. Some writing activities are based on the complete text (review, email/letter, interview questions).
They are WRITING exercises, so they are also designed to improve student's abilities in different styles of writing. Styles include:
- Diary Entries
- Personal Letters / email
- Formal Letters (Letters of Recommendation, Job Application etc.)
- Dialogues (You could ask student to act out.)
- Presentation / Slideshow (including internet research)
- Interview Questions
- Creative Writing
- Newspaper Reports
- Media (Poster / Flyer)
All assignments include hints, sub-headings or structure guides to provide a starting point or scaffolding to help students get started.
There are 24 activities in total. These high order tasks give students an opportunity to show a deep understanding of the novel and character, as well as to practice writing in different formats. Many of the activities could be used for summative assessment.
It's a Word document, so editable to suit your class. There are activities for each part of the book. The document is organised in this manner. The preview file includes three activities - one of which is a pre-reading project.
I like to incorporate the teaching of writing styles into our study of the novel, using it as an "anchor" text for many different types of activities. Students are caught up in the story, and they don't see these high order activities as new (or difficult) learning topics.
