Two source texts that deal with the two Germanys proclaimed on 9 November 1918. Source 1 is the speech given by Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann proclaiming a democratic republic. Source 2 is the speech given by Communist leader Karl Liebknecht proclaiming a Communist soviet republic.
This resource can be used to investigate the question why Scheidemann was successful establishing a democratic republic (Germany's first democracy!) whereas the Communist Spartacus League under Liebknecht failed. It can also be used to speculate on the question how Germany's history might have been different had Liebknecht succeeded.
