A Few Additional Notes
In the unit project, students are assigned to be a particular character from the book for the unit. All students gather information and complete written character sketches about their characters. In addition students have projects directly related to their characters' work, hobbies, or role in the novel. The Project Resources section of the LitPlan has detailed assignment pages for each character as well as graphic organizers and other pages to guide students through their projects.
There are also three writing assignments in this unit, each with the purpose of informing, persuading, or expressing personal opinions.
In the first writing assignment, students (in the voice of their assigned characters) persuade Sydelle to give them her notebook. Sydelle and Angela persuade the other characters that they do not need or should not want the notebook.
The second writing assignment's focus is on logical thinking, reviewing knowledge gained so far in the book, and projecting likely endings--as students write a composition in which they tell who they think will win the Westing game and how the novel will play out to the end.
In the third writing assignment, students gather and create information to make a Facebook page for their characters.
This LitPlan is in the extended second edition format with extra points to ponder in discussing each section of the book, extra vocabulary review activities for each reading assignment, re-ordered LitPlan sections with Daily Lessons before all resource materials, and an extra Project Resources section that has detailed assignment sheets and graphic organizers for each character's project.
These materials are geared for whole class use but are very easily adapted for independent study work, lit circles or book groups, home school use, or tutoring. If you have never taught this book before, this manual will give you a great foundation of materials on a variety of levels. If you have taught this book before, you might like to know that many veteran teachers have told us they have found our LitPlan Teacher Pack manuals to be much more thorough and more helpful than other materials they have used.
