This unit will allow teachers to review the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond after students have read it as a summer reading project. The unit begins with a day of plot review in which students are put into groups and asked to recap a set number of pages for the class. In this way, the entire plot will be quickly recapped as a foundation for the unit. A vocabulary list is included, and students will define the words, write sentences for each word to practice meaning and usage, and be quizzed on the words. Meanwhile, the eight elements of literature will be taught, and students will again be placed into small groups which will be assigned one of five different elements of literature to investigate in the novel. Finally, the unit will conclude with a four-paragraph essay centered around a thesis statement.
This unit contains the following:
--a seventeen-day schedule/ timeline for covering the book upon return from summer vacation
--a vocabulary list
--a vocabulary quiz
--a description of the elements of literature review activity for small groups
--an essay topic, outline, and timeline of due dates for each paragraph of the four paragraph essay
This unit can be modified for differentiated learning; it is designed for an accelerated sixth grade or a traditionally paced seventh grade class. This could also be used as an enrichment activity for students in a class who may thrive on additional work while the remainder of the class needs extra time to cover the basic curriculum.
