The attached file is a two week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Winds of Change." In my progression, this would be weeks 5 and 6, however they do not have to be taught all together or in this particular order, however I would teach this week after I had taught about tornadoes.
This lesson plan is a 10 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and 14 student activity pages, including a page to compare and contrast the movie to the book. I have also included a sample parent permission letter to allow students to watch the video. It is rated PG and in my district, I would have to gain parent permission. There is also an additional links to videos and websites. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

The focus standards are:
RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

Students will listen to the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and complete various activities and answer questions about the characters, setting and events in the story. They will draw several mythical creatures as described in the book as well as create a map for part of the journey of Dorothy and her friends. There is an optional activity and links to where the materials can be downloaded and/or purchased.

At the time I wrote this lesson, I used a free digital copy of the book from iBooks on my iPad.
