I just LOVE The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes. It is such a great book that has worked on so many great levels with my classroom of gifted 3rd and 4th graders, that after I made a close reading guide for the book, I had to add a scrapbook and an extension activity. The sweetness of the characters in this story lend themselves to so many wonderful classroom discussions with students of various ages and abilities that I wanted to explore characterization in a novel more deeply with my students. The scrapbook is a writing project designed for students to explore the development of various characters in the story by putting themselves into Billy's shoes and writing about his life. The project presented at the end of the scrapbook is a diorama project with a similar goal - to use what we know about Billy to build his "habitat" (much like Billy had to create an animal habitat in the story). I have used these projects with my gifted 2nd grade all the way through grade 5. Please feel free to ask questions! Thank you! (CCSS W.3-W.5)
