I am confident that this reading guide will engage students while supporting them as they travel through this beautiful coming-of-age novel. There are a variety of activities and strategies here that ask students to consider characterization, the unique setting, and the writer's powerful imagery. Most of all, students will be guided through an understanding of the protagonist's challenging journey toward adulthood. There is even a fun map poem assignment that my students enjoy. I pair that with a mini-art project (colored pencils and torn construction paper) that allows students to feel as if they are there in the scrub of Central Florida!
