This file contains materials for a complete 7-class period unit (90-minute classes) on Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. The unit is designed to help students recognize elements of a novel that are worthy of critical analysis, including narrative voice, complex characterization, setting, theme, and symbolism. Each class period in the unit includes a reading quiz, instruction on the elements of critical analysis, in-class activities, discussion questions. The unit also includes two timed writes (from past AP exams). This unit plan does not include scripted lesson plans, but the materials are in-depth, with detailed instructions. Some teacher scripting and modeling has also been included.
