When reading Zora Neale Hurston's novel *Their Eyes Were Watching God,* Janie's light skin, "good hair," and white features are often mentioned. After a few occurrences of this, I present Janie's family tree for discussion. It usually generates lively debate -- initially about her race, then ultimately about social injustice. With little prompting, students will use the text to support their opinions.
I use Janie's genealogy as a discussion starter. It could be extended to a Socratic seminar or formal essay.
Please rate this product and participate in a discussion on Janie's race. I'm curious about other readers' take on the subject.
