As students read, they are required to keep a journal of significant quotations. The teacher may decide how many quotation per reading section. I usually required four, and would have students read two to three chapters at a time. The students must provide a 2-3 sentence analysis of the quotation (not just a paraphrase). The handout gives students several things to look for (Theme, Motif, Symbol, etc) and also provides examples of what the analysis sentence should look like.
