Over the years, teaching thematic writing has been quite the journey. It has been a challenge to find a "sweet spot" that not only requires that students utilize evidence from the text to support a theme, but present that evidence in a sophisticated way.
This outline is for both Gen. Ed and ENL students. The ENL version includes sentence-stems within the outline that help students to explain their evidence in their own words.
The outline also requires that students revisit the text to describe the context (circumstances surrounding the thematic quote) by extracting the who, what, where, when, and why/how.
