OH NO! While studying the many regions of the Earth and considering a takeover, mad scientist Dr. Spidey A. Spooky mixed together some volatile solutions, causing the thematic region maps to be all mixed up! Can your students help by answering questions about the six types of thematic maps and using their creative thinking skills to solve the FINAL CLUE? Hurry! Because of Dr. Spooky's crazy mistake, time may be running out for the world as we know it!
This ESCAPE ROOM was such a blast for my middle school geography students. After learning about each thematic map - political, physical, climate, vegetation, economic activity, and population density - my students were able to demonstrate their map-using knowledge in this fun and engaging activity. Working independently, with a partner, or in small groups, students can wander the room searching for the puzzles you've printed and posted, answering the questions to create codes that ultimately will give them the FINAL CLUE.
This escape room contains 11 maps and coordinating questions.
EXTENSION IDEA: Teachers, consider wearing a lab coat and some safety goggles, mess up your hair, and get out your spookiest voice for some added engagement as you become Dr. Spooky, trapping your students in the classroom until they can solve the puzzles. Use lock boxes and keys or combinations hidden around the room to add a challenge and/or lengthen the activity. This activity took my students 40-50 minutes.
If printing, these puzzles will need to be in color. They can also be used digitally by delivering the puzzle pages or code breaker page via iPad or other device.
